    Mayor Edivaldo Holanda Júnior (PDT) sanctioned, on the afternoon of a Thursday 26/09/2019, a bill prohibiting the acquisition and use of disposable plastic utensils within the municipality of São Luís.

    The new Municipal Law No. 6,554/19 aims to preserve the environment, contributing to the implementation of a new ecologically correct culture and aims to ensure a better future for all generations. It also puts São Luís in a prominent position with regard to the implementation of sustainable public policies.

    “This is a law of extreme importance, which makes our capital even more prominent in environmental preservation work. The City Hall, over the last few years, has achieved several achievements in this sector, such as ecopontos cases and the new Ribeira Landfill, a reference in the country. I congratulate President Osmar Filho on this initiative that will greatly contribute to the work we are already developing,” said the mayor.

    The device vetoes the acquisition and use of cups and other disposable plastic utensils in all organs (Secretariats, Public Companies and Foundations, for example) of the Public Administration of the Municipality of São Luís. The ban extends to restaurants, bars, snack bars, beach stalls, street walkers and the like, both of the use and the supply of this type of product. The Law states that disposable plastic products be replaced by disposable shaded from proven biodegradable material – those suitable for natural decomposition, such as paper or permanent use.
